Who is Roy Ayers? Not everyone would instinctively recognise him, or even claim to have ever heard of him. However, to those who may know something about him would agree his career is an incredible success story. The feature takes a retrospective look at one of jazz music's most influencial and unsung living legends. It touches upon three main musical eras. Firstly we begin in those swinging sixties when his career first kicked off. He served out his apprentiship playing the Los Angeles live Jazz circuit working alongside some the all time jazz greats of our time. The story continues into the funky Seventies which some might say produced some of his most well loved work, and concludes with his involvement with his own productions at the turn of the Eighties. He has certainly contributed towards a timeless selection of grooves which bear all the hallmarks of longevity. He continues to produce quality material which has enabled him to sustain a vibrant career spanning more than four decades. His involvement as an artist and producer have also become legendary. His music has also influenced whole range of artists, and his sound has filtered through into Hip Hop, R & B and House music. The true measure of his success has been his ability to move his music along with the times. The bond he has created with his audience is a testomony to his hard work.
