HERBIE MANN

BIOGRAPHY

Born Herbert J. Solomon,

16th April 1930,

Brooklyn,

NY,

USA.

Flutist Herbie Mann had incorporated many different musical styles into his jazz improvisations throughout the years. After playing straight-ahead jazz in the 1950s, Mann gradually descended over the next three decades into improvised jazzy-pop, soul-jazz, and world music-influenced music.

He began playing, writing, and directing music for television dramas before starting and recording with his own groups. From 1954-58, Mann, doubling on tenor and bass clarinet, often played be bop with players such as Phil Woods, Buddy Collette, Sam Most, Bobby Jasper, and Charlie Rouse.

In the late 1960s, he brought in elements from rock onto his albums, a huge and critical success. By the 1970s Mann had been a producer at Embroyo (a subsidiary of Atlantic Records), and had become one of the most popular jazz flutists, using young sidemen such as Chick Corea and Roy Ayers in his groups.

The Herbie Mann /Roy Ayers collaboration began in the early sixties
